High School Hero
The Hives-esk WHARVES drop their latest single and announce run of tour dates.
WHARVES
Lennox Heads rockers WHARVES have just releases their latest single High School Hero. A darker, groove-infused follow up to last year’s well-loved releases Love Decide and Man You Want Me To Be.
Talking about the track, vocalist Matt Collins explains “’High School Hero started off as a simple demo, sounding like a nursery rhyme. It was a bit ridiculous and we almost forgot about it. Then we brought it into the studio and breathed fresh life into it, trying our lyrics from another song on this one.
“Initially as a joke, we decided to try a catchy chant vibe, like Devo, Pet Shop Boys, and Chess the musical,” Collins continues. “But it worked almost too well, so the song now features us pretending to be cheerleaders, chanting “High School Hero Number One!” in unison. We also recorded the drums by just one room microphone, which was typically what The Beatles did with Ringo.”
‘High School Hero’ was recorded at Rockinghorse Studios Coorabell (Byron/Lennox hinterland) in January 2018. It was engineered, produced and mixed by Steven Schram (Paul Kelly, San Cisco), and mastered by Steven Smart at Studios 301.
Last year, WHARVES took out the Triple J Unearthed spot to open Splendour In The Grass, and shortly after signed with the renowned 123 Agency. The following months saw the band join back-to-back tours, including supports alongside the likes of Wolfmother, Dear Seattle, Kingswood, Ocean Alley, The Vanns, Jack River, Bad Pony, and Polish Club. Adding to their impressive resume were slots at festivals such as Falls Festival, BIGSOUND, Festival of the Sun, Byron Guitar Fest, and Beach Sounds Festival.
With a powerful and highly skilled live act, and a quickly developing discography of post-punk tunes including acclaimed singles ‘Man You Want Me To Be’ and ‘Love Decide’, the quartet are gearing up for an exciting year, kicking off with brand new single ‘High School Hero’.
